I've been told this is
I. Germanica (I recently purchased I. Germanica. When it blooms, I'll be more confident that the two are the same.)
TB - Historic - Purple Bi-Tone
'Cat Whiskers' is my  name for this iris.

This is one of a select variety of 'old-fashioned' iris I still have in my gardens.
Purple standards, deeper purple falls with marking resembling "Cat Whiskers." Beards are light yellow. This iris bloomed in May-June last year (2011), zone 5-6. It lasts a long time in the garden. I keep a hillside of this iris because it's just special.

World's Oldest Iris - Historic
Also known as the Cemetery Iris, White Cemetery Iris, or the White Flag Iris. It is a natural hybrid, 30-60 cm tall, grey-green leaves, braod sword-shaped foliage is fan-shaped with 2-3 grey fragrant flowers, silvery in bud and white or off-white and 8cm wide in bloom. It is a sterile hybrid and cannot produce seeds
Under cultivation since ancient times. May be the oldest iris.Originates from Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Appears in a wall painting of the Botanical Garden of Tuthmosis III in the Temple of Amun at Karnak in ancient Thebes dated around 1426 BC.

    I. GERMANICA

1753
Records of I. germanica have been traced back to 1597 in the botanical writings of Gerarde.
TB - Historic - Purple Bi-Tone - Also known as I.Germanica
'Cat Whiskers' is my  name for this iris.

The classic blue neglecta. A naturally occuring hybrid. Like other natural hybrids it is more a 'type' of iris than a specific clone, and there are several cultivars, varying in minor details, under this name.
A practice by the 19th century was usage of the familiar name of a species: I. pallida was Sweet Iris for the pallid (pale) blue, I. albicans the Yemen I., while I. germanica was the German I. and probably initially applied to the various purples.
Somewhere in linguistic history, 'German Iris' became synonymous with 'modern' TB hybrids and, misleading as it is, can still be seen on mass-marketed packaging. Records of I. germanica have been traced back to 1597 in the botanical writings of Gerarde.
The words 'germane, german, germain, germaine,' refer to akin, those having the same parents; from the same root. The Swedish word for I. germanica is trädgårdsiris (träd = of systems with a similar structure; tree & gård = yard). When Carl Linnaeus (Uppsala, Sweden) needed a type specimen (lectotype) for the family Iridaceae, he selected the likely regionally common garden variety, similar enough to each other to be of the same family tree ~ I. germanica ~ for placement in the herbarium in 1753.

Ayers 1929
TB - Historic - Early Season
Description from Cooley's Gardens catalog for 1937: "...while classed as one of our superior reds, it carries a bronzy overcast, being regarded by some as a red blend. At any rate, 'Indian Chief' is one of the most popular of the newer things, and a credit to Dr. Ayres, its introducer. The velvety falls are deep blood-red, blended with bronze, and the standards are considerably lighter in tone. A large flower, quite tall, and very well branched."

Stevens 1945
HM 49, AM 51
TB - Historic - Midseason, 35"
From the Stevens Bros. catalog for 1952-53: "Many years ago we set out to raise an iris with standards of purest white and falls of gold, being moved thereto by our pleasure in this fresh and lovely combination. Little by little as the years went by we have seen these colours developing amoungst our seedings until in November of 1944, there unfolded this flower, which by reason of its snow white standards rising from the primrose falls we have named 'Pinnacle'. It is not the white and gold of our original ambition - which we have called 'Summit' - and is a very different combination. 'Pinnacle' is large and beautifully formed and with excellent substance, and the plant has ideal growth habit. fresh, cool, flawless in its purity of colouring and absolutely unique, this iris has won the awards of the American Iris Society of the Honorable Mention in 1949, and then the Award of Merit in 1951, with a record number of the judges' votes, and has become world famous."

    SWERTI X 2

1612
Emanuel Sweerts, Dutch artist, botanist and merchant of rare plants, collected an iris on a flower-collecting excursion near Amsterdam. He dug it up, cultivated it, and eventually sold it as a rare and exotic flower. It came to be known as Sweerts' Iris.
Historic - VERY OLD - 400 Years Old
Iris Swertii, is an unromantic name for a very old, romantic looking flower. First catalogued in 1612. Swertii is recognized as one of the oldest iris which still in existence; second only to
I. Florentina and I. Pallida which date from the 1500s. It is a antural hybrid, parentage unknown - courtesy, as they say, of God and a honey bee.
I'm sorting out the difference, if any, between Swert, Sweerts', Swertii, Swertii #2, and Swertii x 2. I can only say this came to me under the name SWERTI X 2.
When I know more, I'm sure you'll see it here.
I'll be writing a blog about Mr. Swert as soon as I have enough information to make it interesting. See rossroadiris.com/irisblog.
Iris Swertii actually means Sweerts Iris

The vultivar found today is not the registerede cultivar 'Zebra' which had white flowers striped blue. Apparently that cultivar has disappeared and a variety of 'Iris pallida' with yellow striped foliage has assumed the name. The first promotion of the new 'Zebra seemed to be in the old Lloyd Austin Catalogs of his Rainblow Gardens. It has becoe a popular lant with landscapers in some part of the USA. A close relative is 'Argentea' which is a pallida with white striped foliage.
